I do a lot of my work remotely. The freedom of being officeless is great. My office is wherever I have a link to the internet – or not. I can develop products and ideas on paper to. Since I have freed myself from a work location, I have been able to spend even more time with my children.
We recently pulled my daughter out of half day childcare to watch her on our own every day. Fiona is at the office two days of the week which allows me to be with my daughter Kaiya those two days. The other three week days I work remotely – so I can work undisturbed.
Here is how it use to look:
Kaiya would arrive at child care at 8:15am and we would pick her up at 12:15pm. So basically 4 hours a day Monday through Friday. The cost was a little over $600/month. We pulled Kaiya out and now we do it differently.
I take Kaiya with me to drop my son off at my mother’s child care http://www.caringcenter.com and Kaiya and I go to New Self Renewal Center http://www.newselfrenewal.com . They have a great child care area where Kaiya gets special attention while she plays with children of different ages in a large, clean and bright environment. We are allowed to have Kaiya there 2 hours 45 minutes a day. The time is included in our monthly family membership fees of $71 or $710/year.
I drop off Kaiya and get to work in their office space. A quiet place away from distractions where I can work online. I can also use their gym or get in on a class. I know some women who just go to read a book, have lunch, use the spa services or just take a long shower.
When the time is up, I pick up Kaiya and bring her home for a nap that is usually 2 to 2.5 hours long. So on average I get 4.5 to 5 hours of work time even when I am watching Kaiya.
The cost of this? Well if you take into account that we were paying $600/month for 4 hours of care per day (not on Saturdays) and now I get 2.75 hours for free (including Saturdays) + 2-2.5 hours at home during her nap – I get 4+ hours a day for $71/month. Much better than $600/month.
