Eat Like a Horse

Many people feel that to lose weight, they have to cut down on how much they eat. In some cases that may be true. However, when putting on muscle and staying fit, you may have to eat like a horse.

When working through my last 30-day weight gain experiment, I found that I got what I call “food fatigue.” I was eating so much – more than twice what I normally did, that I just got tired of eating. I wouldn’t even be hungry for the next meal when the time came. I was eating 5 meals a day.

What did I do? Well, not enough. As I ate the right foods and cut out fast food, sodas, large desserts, had a “vacation day” every week where I could eat whatever I wanted and I was actually losing weight. My weight went down and I wondered what the heck was going on.

I found at the end of the 30 days that I had lost 12.9 Lbs of fat and gained 10 Lbs of muscle by doing this.

Why gain muscle? It is one of the best ways to burn fat at rest. Every pound of muscle burns from 50 -300 calories a day. This number varies greatly depending on who you talk to and how physically active you are during a 24 hour period.

When was the last time you saw a FAT HORSE? Why do I say, “eat like a horse?” Well, after doing a little research one site said that a horse eats about 2% of its body weight in food each day. For me, that would be a little more than 5 Lbs of food. Okay, I don’t think I eat 5 Lbs of solid food each day but I do if you count liquids (protein shakes). 5 meals, 1 Lb (16oz.) of food for each meal. Now I’ve never ridden a horse or owned one myself, so horse lovers please give me a little leeway here. (Thanks)

Here are a few tricks that I found that work well for me when feeling food fatigue. At least one of these should do the trick for you. Remember, eat a lot of the right foods.

  • 1. Stand up and eat
  • 2. Don’t eat 2 or 3 cups of one dish (beans and rice) without rest. Move on to different flavors then revisit the first dish
  • 3. Reheat cooled food
  • 4. Don’t drink a lot of water with your meal. Just a little before and sip throughout. much of your food has water in it that will help with digestion
  • 5. Eat while you’re doing dishes or something else productive
  • 6. Eat while surfing the internet or play video games
  • 7. Mix up the dishes you eat – don’t eat beans and rice, rice and beans all the time
  • 8. Remember why you are eating so much
  • 9. And here is where “Crystal Meth” plays in. Use the psychology of eating to the beat. When I was a kid, I ate at a pizza restaurant that always played hard rock music. The place was loud and it made me feel like eating half a pizza like some kind of monster. Think about the opposite. You are in a fancy restaurant, dimly lit, hushed conversations, elegant music quietly plays in the background… can you imagine wolfing down a pizza there? People tend to move to the beat of music as if in some trance.
  • I work out to and sometimes eat to the music of the music duo The Crystal Method. You may not know them, but I’m sure you’ve heard them on TV or movie before.

The next time you are at a mall where you can hear music playing, watch how people walk. 95% of them will be walking to the beat. Fast tempo music seems to make me eat faster (e.g. the band Crystal Method) or just turn up the radio of some 80’s metal and you’ll feel like dominating that meal!

Make it work. Let me know if this helps.
